News | Gents Inters reach Dublin League final | Posted on 25 Jul '13 by Dave Hayden II | | The Gents Intermediate team booked their place in Monday night's final after a sparkling performance at home against Erin's Isle last night. Needing 5.5 points to progress to the final, it was all to play for against an Erin's Isle side who had reached the final in the three previous seasons.
Stand in Captain Seve McGrath got the team off to a winning start alongside Dave Hayden II, before Erin's Isle levelled proceedings in beating Sean Gallagher and Tom McMorrow. The final doubles had a nail biting finish with both sides looking good for victory over the final few holes, a superb putt for half on 17 followed by an excellent chip on 18 from Gerry Ward was enough to see Gerry and Tony Gallagher give Lucan the point and level the overall proceedings at 6-6.
With the singles about to get underway, both teams knew 3.5 would be the magic number for progression. Lucan made a fast start when Dave Hayden II defeated reigning Dublin Strokeplay and Matchplay champion Dave Donnelly on the 14th. Tom McMorrow quickly followed with victory over Dave Beatty. A good 20 minutes passed before Sean Gallagher reached the eighteenth all square, but when Trevor Heffernan failed to secure a three, Sean took the point. With just half a point needed, Tony Gallagher's chip-in on the 17th was enough to beat Brian Woodward and send Lucan to the final.
Gerry Ward, 2up thru 16, and Noel Ryan, 3up thru 13, called their matches halves.
Lucan will now meet C.P.M. in the final on Monday 29th July in Portmarnock. All support greatly welcome. |
