News | Winter league first week | Posted on 7 Jan '13 by Noel Leonard | | The 2013 winter leagues got off to a tremendous start yesterday especially for the ladies who collected eight scalps[beating a man],but in fairness to the gents they are doing everything to encourage the ladies to continue to play more weekends during the season ahead by allowing the ladies to scalp them.
The holders the Dream Team got off to a comfortable win by beatig Philo Condron's team the Fridge Magnets 8 points to 4.The Dream drafted in Liam Price in place of their "bustler" Pat[Chippy]Flannery, but the pressure got to Liam taking Pats place when he pulled a muscle in his doubles match and had to be carried from the course and forfeit the doubles. In stepped the experienced Gavin Carty to sub for Liam and he got a half in his match with Dan Courtney.Liam will have a fitness test this week to see how the muscle holds out and if he will be available for next Sunday's game.
In Group 1 we had two 9 - 3 results with Christy Kane's team beating Brenda Purcell's stragglers and Andy Fitzgerald's team beating Dan Coady's Dribblers.
In group two Tony McDonnells team hammered Mick Purcells team 10-2,Philip Sweeney's team battered Barbara Furlong's team 11-1 and Patsy Blake's team destroyed Paul Dillon's shower 9-3.
In group 3 Steven Keegan's team flattened Bernie Blakes team 8-4,Des Sheridan's team annihilated Donal Calahan's team 12-0 and Johnny Price's team beat Philo Condron's team 8-4.
