There was a good crowd in Old county on Saturday evening for the Gents Seniors & Inter League Finals. The course was in sublime condition and freshly cut greens just as Glenville teed off the 1st shots of the Senior final. With Old County quest ending for three in a row, there was going to be a new champion in 2018. Glenville started well winning the Opening Doubles, but Lucan fought back to level and the 3rd doubles was a close affair with Glenville edging it 2&1. Glenville were dreaming of a 1st league win since 2004 but they had to wait for the Inter Doubles to finish before they could put that record to bed.
In the Inter Final Lucan were up against the holders ERins Isle. Lucan won the opening doubles but Erins Isle levelled it in Match 2 and the third doubles went the distance. Lucan though winning on the last to win 2-1.
Back to the senior final and Lucan needed a fast start and they got it courtesy of a tie hole win in the opening singles. Lucan then edged ahead with a win in Match 2. Glenville though levelled it at 3-3. It looked like it would go the distance but Lucan won Match 4 to go 4-3 and they won it on the 17th in Match 5 to win 5-3 and reclaim the title they last won in 2015.
Lucan had the upper hand in the Inters heading into the singles, but there was little to choose between the teams and as many expected it went the distance going to the final match. Erins Isle pulled it off in the last game to retain the cup and pull off an historic win.
It was two excellent finals and DCB were very appreciative of Old County offering up the course and very highly complementary of the course. For many of the seniors they will return next Saturday to take part in the All Ireland Qualifying rounds. |
