News | Weekend in Lucan Pitch and Putt Club | Posted on 26 Feb '18 by Andy Fitzgerald | | We had a lot of activity in the club this week end.We had the Captains (Gents) day outing to Ringcommons.
The Captain was in great form and being his day he certainly ascerted his authority as master of ceremonies for the day.We had a few unique performances from Michael Stratford on his party piece and not to be outdone Martin Walsh was demanding more and more encores from himself. The day was a great day with the victory of Ireland in the rugby and Scotland accounting for the Auld Enemy.Everyone had a great day, especially Gents Captain Philip Sweeney.
We then came to the highlight of the Weekend on Sunday, the Final of the Winter League Competition and
a special word of thanks to our sponsor HALFPENNY GOLF who has been synonomous with club competition sponsorship.
The competition brought about two very evenly matched teams. The Team who were defending their consistency in past finals and who were the winners last year. The team in question was SEVES SOCKETS.
Their opponents were by no means new to consistency either and they were well capable of causing an upset, aptly named THE DIGGERS.
THE games of doubles seemed to suggest that Seve would need more than his sockets to stem the tide of the diggers,as the were defeated in both.
The singles played a major part in deciding the outcome of the final result.Seve was first up and had to dig deep to beat Steven.
Next Terry Mc Murrow had to play Linda Thomson and it certainly produced a cliffhangar and ended up all square after 18 holes. In the meantime Stephen Needham beat Tony Mc Donnell, which left the score 6points to Stevens Team and 2points to Seves. In the meantime we turned our attention back to the exciting nail biting match between Linda and Terry which resulted in a victory to Linda on the 4th tie hole.Seve was making a come back and all depended on the outcome of the final match between Agnes Dignam and Alan Doyle which was a very tight match.Alan was 1up with 2holes to go,but Agnes wasnt giving up and she duly responded on the 17th to tie the match on way to final hole .Alan did get the better of the exchange and beat Agnes to tie the match at 6-6.The Final had descended into aTie Hole match over 9holes to decide the FINAL RESULT.Alan Doyle was nominated for Seves Team and Stephen Needham was his opponent from StevensTeam. The match seemed to be a one sided affair as Stephen went 2up after 2holes.The result of the final match was never in doubt as Alan conceded on the 7th hole. A good crowd braved the cold to support both teams and it was a worthy final. So again i will close
by congratulating Steven and his Diggers and commiserate with Seve and his Sockets on a great final.
To our Sponsor HALFPENNY GOLF many thanks for your support and hope to receive your continued sponsorship for this great competition.
N.B.
The Committee would like to extend our condolences to PAT GRAINGER on the recent passing of his Brother.
MAY HE REST IN PEACE.
