Lucan claim first and second in Dublin Rumble

Posted on 18 Apr '12 by Dave Hayden II

Last Sunday saw the Dublin County Board Rumble held for the second year since it's resurrection. The event was played on the Northside of the city, with Erin's Isle and Shandon playing host. The entry for the competition was noticeably down on last years event, but there were still four Lucan teams scheduled for action, however that number would fall to three with the withdrawal of the team of Stephen Needham, Jay Condron and Alan Doyle.

While the competition appears to be a social event on the face of it, on further inspection the format is quite highly pressured, particularly over the daunting final four holes when all three player's scores are combined for the team score. In fact, scoring was first-rate and on both courses, which were in impeccable condition, even at this early stage in the year.

The Lucan team of Anthony Malone, David Hayden and Dave Hayden II had tongues wagging following a superb 81 gross in their opening round in Shandon and when they followed this with a round of 80 in Erin's Isle, it left them nine shots ahead of their nearest rivals in the Overall Gross category.

Meanwhile the Lucan team of Tom McMorrow, Paddy Croke and Paddy Blake quietly went about their business, carding a solid 88 in Shandon followed by a 90 in Erin's Isle. When their handicap of 21 2/3's was subtracted, they looked to be right in the mix for the Overall (Nett) prize.

Players were left in suspense as Dublin Board took the cards away to tackle the arduous task of compiling the results, but the wait was worthwhile when it emerged that Tom McMorrow, Paddy Croke and Paddy Blake had taken the top prize by the smallest of margins, with a 1/3 of a shot victory over the team of Anthony Malone, David Hayden and Dave Hayden II who's meagre 4 shots were enough to see them go one better than the Gross prize.

All in all a fantastic day for Lucan Pitch and Putt club, claiming the two biggest prizes at the opening competition on the Dublin County Board calendar.
